ComparisonsBackpack vs Skooly

Backpack vs Skooly is a fair question, because both start at $9 a month. We make Backpack, so read this knowing that. The two $9 plans hold very different things. Below is what each plan includes, which Skooly tier holds which feature, and where each tool is the better pick. Every fact was checked on each vendor's own pages on 29 September 2026.

Backpack and Skooly both start at $9 a month, but the plans hold different things. Backpack's one $9 plan includes failed payment, cancellation and welcome messages, post scheduling and Claude or ChatGPT access. Skooly's $9 plan covers a DM inbox, quick replies and link analytics. Its DM sequences, post scheduling and MCP sit in its $59 VIP plan.

Same $9, different plans

Backpack has one plan. It is $9 a month with every feature, for every Skool community you admin, with 7 days free. There are no tiers and nothing to upgrade to.

Skooly has three plans on its site:

  • Standard, $9 a month: one inbox for your Skool DMs, quick replies and follow-up flags, link analytics and saved quick messages.
  • Premium, $39 a month: Night Hawk, which "watches your community 24/7", alerts for members at risk of cancelling, live MRR and cash, Planning (a kanban CRM), TalonTag (bulk tagging and member lists), Hawkeye (course progress) and testimonial pages on your own domain.
  • VIP, $59 a month: DM Sequences, which Skooly calls "the 24/7 win-back engine", with "13 triggers, branching, wait-for-reply". Also AI-drafted replies with Skooly Sidekick, email broadcasts, and everything in Standard and Premium.

Skooly's page on Skool adds three more VIP benefits: scheduling posts "in any group you belong to", automated DM flows to welcome members, and "Skooly AI, MCP, and CLI". Its compare page counts 29 features on Standard, 77 on Premium and 101 on VIP.

Compare the plan that holds your job, not the headline price.

The jobs, one by one

Failed payments

Skool already retries a declined card, shows the member a red "Declined" label and prompts them to update their card, per Skool's help article. Both tools add a personal message on top. Backpack's Payment Recovery starts within an hour of the failed payment, sends a short sequence with delays you set, and stops once the payment goes through. Skooly's Skool page says the upgrade gets "DM sequences that welcome new members, recover declined payments, or celebrate level-ups". Its compare page puts DM sequences on VIP only, so on Skooly this job costs $59 a month. More on the job itself: getting members back after a failed payment.

Cancellations

Backpack's Cancellation Recovery fires when a member cancels, sends your messages spaced how you choose, and stops if they resubscribe. Skooly's pages do not list a cancellation trigger. Its privacy policy names the DM sequence triggers as "member join, churn signals, tier changes". Skooly takes a different angle: on Premium and VIP, it flags members at risk before they cancel, so you can reach them early.

Welcome messages

Backpack's Welcome Drip sends your welcome within an hour of someone joining, then the check-ins you add. On Skooly, a welcome is a DM sequence with a new member trigger, so it sits on VIP at $59.

Post scheduling

Backpack's Post Scheduler takes a title, body and category, posts at the day and time you pick in your own time zone, and lets you edit or cancel a post until it goes out. It posts to the communities you switch on. Skooly's scheduled posts are on VIP. They take attachments, polls and videos, and can go "in any group you belong to". VIP also lists recurring posts, post templates and a calendar view. More in our guide to scheduling Skool posts.

Claude, ChatGPT and AI

With Backpack, you connect your own Claude or ChatGPT with one link. You can ask it about your members and your recovery sequences, and have it write posts and put them in your schedule. It cannot send DMs or change the messages you wrote. Backpack itself has no AI inside: it sends exactly what you wrote. Skooly lists "Skooly AI, MCP, and CLI" on VIP, plus Skooly Sidekick, which drafts replies for you. Its pages do not say which AI apps its MCP works with. More on connecting Claude or ChatGPT to Skool.

Where your Skool session lives

Both tools work with your computer off, and both do it the same way: they keep your signed-in Skool session on their servers. Skooly's privacy policy says "we store your Skool.com authentication cookies on our servers", encrypted with "AES-256-GCM encryption at rest", and that its automated DMs and posts use them. You can delete them from your Skooly dashboard at any time, which stops all automated actions.

Backpack stores your Skool session, encrypted at rest, with the key held apart from the database. Our privacy policy limits its use to three things: reading the member list and payment state of each community you switch on, sending the messages you wrote, and publishing the posts you scheduled. Backpack never stores your Skool password. You can revoke the session at any time, and it is deleted when you do.

If you would rather no tool held your session, neither of these fits. Our comparison of Skool Chrome extensions covers one that keeps everything on your own computer instead.

Where Skooly is the better pick

  • You want a wide toolkit. A DM inbox, quick replies, link analytics, at-risk alerts, live MRR, testimonial pages and email broadcasts. Backpack's five features do not include any of these.
  • You want AI to draft replies for you. Skooly Sidekick does that on VIP. Backpack has no AI inside.
  • You post in groups you do not run. Skooly VIP schedules posts in any group you belong to and lists a dashboard across all your communities. Backpack only works in communities you admin.
  • You want branching sequences. Skooly lists 13 triggers, branching and wait-for-reply. Backpack's sequences are messages with delays you set, started by a failed payment, a cancellation or a new member.
  • You want it from the Chrome Web Store today. Skooly is listed there. Backpack is not on the store yet.
  • You want support calls. Skooly's Skool page says all plans include "1-on-1 support calls as needed".

Where Backpack is the better pick

  • You want the follow-up jobs at $9. Failed payment, cancellation and welcome messages, post scheduling and your own Claude or ChatGPT are all in Backpack's one plan. On Skooly, DM sequences, scheduled posts and MCP are on VIP, which is $50 a month more.
  • You want a message when a member cancels. Backpack sends one. Skooly's pages do not list that trigger.
  • You want one price. No tiers, and no upgrade to unlock a feature later.
  • You want to write every word. Backpack sends exactly what you wrote, and any AI you connect cannot send DMs.

Which one fits you

Backpack vs Skooly comes down to one question. Do you want a wide set of tools for running a community, or the follow-up jobs done for the lowest price? For the toolkit, Skooly's Premium or VIP plan covers far more. If it is failed payments, cancellations, welcomes, scheduled posts and your own AI in the communities you admin, Backpack does all of it for $9. FAQ

What is the price difference between Backpack and Skooly?

Both start at $9 a month. The difference is what $9 buys. Backpack's one plan includes every feature for every Skool community you admin. Skooly's $9 Standard plan covers an inbox, quick replies and link analytics. Its DM sequences, scheduled posts and MCP are on VIP at $59. Premium, at $39, adds Night Hawk, at-risk alerts and live MRR.

Which one works when my computer is off?

Both do, for their automations. Backpack sends messages and scheduled posts from its servers. Skooly runs Night Hawk, DM sequences and scheduled posts from its servers. To do that, both store your signed-in Skool session, encrypted. Skooly stores your Skool.com cookies with AES-256-GCM encryption. Backpack stores the session and holds the key separately.

Does Backpack or Skooly need my Skool password?

Backpack never asks for your Skool password and never stores one. It stores your Skool session, encrypted, and you can revoke it at any time. Skooly's privacy policy says it stores your Skool.com authentication cookies on its servers, encrypted, and that you can delete them from your Skooly dashboard.

Can I use Backpack or Skooly for more than one community?

Backpack covers every Skool community you admin on one $9 plan, with no limit on members. It does not work in groups where you are only a member. Skooly does not say how many communities a plan covers. Its VIP plan lists scheduling posts in any group you belong to and a dashboard across all your Skool communities.

Is Backpack a Skooly alternative for failed payment messages?

Yes, for that job. Backpack sends failed payment messages in its $9 plan, along with cancellation and welcome messages, post scheduling and your own Claude or ChatGPT. On Skooly, the same messages need DM sequences on the $59 VIP plan. Our Skool Chrome extensions comparison covers four more tools that send failed payment messages.

Is Backpack on the Chrome Web Store like Skooly?

Not yet. Skooly is listed on the Chrome Web Store as "Skooly - Tools for Skool". You join Backpack through its community at skool.com/backpack, where Skool takes the $9 monthly payment and where you cancel. Both tools have a 7-day free trial, and both bill through their own Skool community.
