Backpack vs Wingman comes down to three things: price, setup help, and what happens when your computer is off. Both are Chrome extensions for Skool community owners. Both message members whose card fails, who cancel, or who just joined, and both schedule posts. We make Backpack, so read this knowing that. Every price and feature below comes from each tool's own pages, checked on 29 September 2026.
Backpack costs $9 a month for every feature, on every Skool community you admin, and runs from its servers, so it works with your computer off. Wingman costs $69 a month or $690 a year and includes done-with-you setup. Both send failed payment, cancellation and welcome messages and schedule posts. A lite Wingman comes with Goosify's $3 a year membership.

Price: $9 against $69
Backpack is one plan: $9 a month for every feature, for every Skool community you admin, with 7 days free. There is no yearly plan, so a year costs $108.
Wingman's Skool page says "lock in $69/month or $690/year for life", with 7 days free. Twelve months at $69 is $828, so paying yearly saves $138, which the page calls "2 months FREE".
There is also a cheaper way in. Wingman's page says you can now get Wingman in the Goosify community on Skool. Its $3 a year membership includes a roadmap, weekly group calls and a "Lite version of Wingman (CRM, Onboarding followups, Slash Commands, + more)". The full Wingman and scheduled posts are on its $69 a month tier. Goosify's page does not say whether the lite version sends failed payment or cancellation messages.
Failed payments, cancellations and welcome messages
Both tools do all three. Skool already retries a declined card on its own and marks the member "Declined" in your member list. Both tools add a personal message from you on top of that.
Wingman's store listing names "Automatic welcome, churned, canceling, card declined DMs + followups".
Backpack splits it into three features:
- Payment Recovery starts within an hour of a failed payment, sends a short sequence with gaps you set, and stops once the payment goes through.
- Cancellation Recovery fires when a member cancels and stops if they resubscribe.
- Welcome Drip sends your welcome within an hour of someone joining, then a check-in a few days later.
You write every message, starting from short starter messages. Backpack fills in the member's first name and sends exactly what you wrote, from your own Skool account, as a normal DM. There is no AI inside Backpack. More on this job: how to get members back after a failed payment.
Post scheduling
Both schedule posts. Wingman includes it in the $69 plan. Goosify lists it on its $69 tier, not the $3 one.
In Backpack you write the title, body and category, then pick the day and time in your own time zone. You can edit or cancel the post right up until it goes out. It posts from our servers, from your own Skool account, so your laptop can be shut. Our guide to scheduling Skool posts also covers what Skool does on its own.
Setup and support
This is where Wingman offers more. Its Skool page lists "done-with-you setup so you're live in 30 minutes", a step-by-step roadmap, and a quick start call with DM support on the $69 plan. If you want a person to walk you through it, Wingman has the edge.
Backpack's plan does not list a setup call. Setup is three steps: rewrite the starter messages, choose which ones send and the gap between them, then let it run.
Your computer, and your Skool session
A Chrome extension only runs while Chrome is open. To send messages while your laptop is shut, a tool's servers have to act as you inside Skool, using a copy of your signed-in Skool session.
Backpack works this way. It stores your Skool session, encrypted at rest, with the key held separately from the database. It uses it for three things only: reading the member list and payment state of each community you switch on, sending the messages you wrote, and publishing the posts you scheduled. It never stores your Skool password, and you can revoke the session at any time, which deletes it. In return, your messages still go out while you sleep.
Wingman's privacy policy, updated 28 September 2026, says that once you consent, the extension reads your Skool cookies, including the session cookie. It encrypts the session in your browser before sending it to Goosify's servers "for features that need it". None of Wingman's pages say whether its messages go out while your computer is off. Ask them if that matters to you. For what each store listing declares, see our comparison of Skool Chrome extensions.
Connecting Claude or ChatGPT
Backpack includes an MCP connection. You paste one link into your own Claude or ChatGPT and sign in with your email. Then you can ask it who failed a payment this week, or have it write a post and put it in your schedule. It sees your Backpack data and nothing else, and it cannot send DMs or change the messages you wrote.
Connecting your own Claude or ChatGPT is not listed on Wingman's pages. Wingman's privacy policy does describe built-in AI features, such as DM suggestions, rewrites and a Copilot, which send the text to OpenAI when you use them. So Wingman can help you draft messages, while Backpack leaves the writing to you and lets your own AI read your data. How that works: connecting Claude or ChatGPT to Skool.
Where Wingman is the better pick
- You want help setting up. Done-with-you setup, a quick start call and a roadmap come with the $69 plan.
- You want the lowest entry price. Goosify's $3 a year membership includes a lite Wingman. Check it covers your job.
- You want to pay yearly. Wingman is $690 a year. Backpack has no yearly plan.
- You want more than messages and posts. Wingman lists slash commands, post bookmarks, lead tracking and tagging, auto-moderation and AI drafting. Backpack does not do these.
- You want it from the Chrome Web Store today. Backpack is not listed there yet.
Where Backpack is the better pick
- You want the core jobs for less. $9 a month against $69 for the full Wingman. That is $108 a year against $690 or $828.
- You need it to work with your computer off. Backpack sends from our servers. Wingman's pages do not say either way.
- You want your own Claude or ChatGPT connected. MCP is in Backpack's $9 plan. It is not listed on Wingman's pages.
- You want one price. No tiers. Every feature is in the $9 plan.
One Backpack plan covers every Skool community you admin. Wingman's pages do not say how many communities a plan covers.
So, Backpack vs Wingman. If you want setup help, extras like slash commands and lead tagging, or a $3 lite version through Goosify, the Wingman Skool CRM is worth a look. If you want failed payments, cancellations, welcomes, scheduled posts and your own AI for $9 a month, running with your computer off, Backpack is the Wingman alternative to try. Each has a free week, so test one at a time. If you start with ours, try Backpack free for 7 days.
FAQ
How much cheaper is Backpack than Wingman?
Backpack is $60 a month cheaper than Wingman's full plan. Backpack costs $9 a month for every feature, on every Skool community you admin. Wingman costs $69 a month, or $690 a year if you pay yearly. Over twelve months that is $108 for Backpack against $690 or $828 for Wingman. Both have 7 days free.
Is there a cheaper version of Wingman?
Yes. Goosify's Skool community lists its membership at $3 a year, and it includes a "Lite version of Wingman" with a CRM, onboarding follow-ups and slash commands. Scheduled posts and the full Wingman are on Goosify's $69 a month tier. Goosify's page does not say whether the lite version sends failed payment messages.
Does Wingman work when my computer is off?
Wingman's pages do not say. Its privacy policy says that once you consent, the extension encrypts your Skool session and sends it to Goosify's servers for features that need it. But no page states whether messages go out with your computer off. Backpack sends from our servers, so it works with your computer off.
Do I get setup help with Backpack or Wingman?
Wingman offers more setup help. Its Skool page lists done-with-you setup "so you're live in 30 minutes", a quick start call, DM support and a step-by-step roadmap. Backpack does not list a setup call. It gives you short starter messages to rewrite in your own words, then you choose which ones send and when.
Can I connect Claude or ChatGPT to Wingman?
Connecting your own Claude or ChatGPT is not listed on Wingman's pages. Its privacy policy describes built-in AI drafting, such as DM suggestions and rewrites, that sends text to OpenAI when you use it. Backpack includes an MCP connection in its $9 plan, so your own Claude or ChatGPT can read your Backpack data and schedule posts.
Can I use Backpack and Wingman at the same time?
You can install both, but do not let both send the same messages. If both tools follow up on a failed payment or a cancellation, the member gets two messages. Use the free trials one at a time, pick the tool you keep, and switch the other one off for that job.
